Recent Flight Attendant Graduate Writes a Note to Students

In late October, Pinnacle Airlines | Delta Connection held a private open house at The Travel Academy for our graduates ONLY! They offered Elizabeth N., Dolly M., Faelynn H. and Der V. Flight Attendant positions. View a note from Elizabeth N. below!

When I was Eighteen, I had a two-fold dream, to either become a Teacher or a Flight Attendant. At the time, I thought becoming a teacher might be more conductive to raising a family, so for the past thirty-four years I taught drama, speech communication, and English. My students and I went on many adventures together through the pages of literature, and now, as an empty nester, I wanted to visit some of those places that I once only imagined. I knew that although I loved teaching, it was time for me to move on and make a change; therefore in the fall 2009, I began steps to make my dream a reality. As I was surfing the net trying to find airlines that were hiring, I came across a fabulous website called TheTravelAcademy.com. The site actually seemed too good to be true; in 6 weeks, I could be a flight attendant?
My inner instincts whispered to me that this must be some sort of scam, how could a generic travel academy have the kind of connections that could really help me land a job as a flight attendant? Then I did a self-evaluation and realized that no airline would want to hire me as a flight attendant; I was too old and I weighed almost 300 lbs. Well, I began emailing the President, Curt and although he made it clear that he could not promise me a job offer, his academy had the means to train me and connect me to interviews where I could find success. He also assured me that my age wouldn’t be a problem.
I immediately filed for retirement and sought out a surgeon to perform a Gastric-bypass last November 16, 2009. I decided to give myself the summer to lose as much weight as I possibly could. I worked out with a trainer 3 times a week all summer and began riding my bicycle on fifteen-mile routes each morning. I live in Texas, so I had to begin my ride at 6:30AM to beat the Texas heat. I signed up for a six-week class at The Travel Academy beginning on September 20, 2010, which was actually my birthday. By the beginning of this class, I had lost 110 lbs., but I needed to lose thirty more pounds, so I brought my bike with me and enjoyed riding on the beautiful bike trails and around the picturesque lakes found here in Bloomington, MN.
On Thursday, October 21, 2010, after many hours of interview training and resume writing, Pinnacle Airlines was hosting a private open house at The Travel Academy and I had an interview. I was hired on the spot. At the time of the interview, I had lost thirteen more lbs., and I felt like a million dollars! On November 8, 2010, I went to Memphis, Tennessee and began my new career.
My husband and I are thrilled to be able to travel together. Did you know that you and your family can receive free and reduced travel. This is just a super exciting time in my life. I feel like I’m twenty-years-old again! Believe me, if you are serious about a travel career, this is the place to go. You will enjoy classes immensely; although the classes are challenging, the teachers make it fun and enjoyable! I want you to realize that this school is not a gimmick; it is the real thing. I had a dream and it took a lot of hard work, but between believing in myself, my support system, and the teachers at The Travel Academy, my dream is now a reality! Elizabeth N. – Keller, Texas
